Sostenibilità e artigianalità āim handmade in Italy è un brand italiano di borse creato dalla designer Anna Maria Mongillo: designer di borse ed accessori, Anna Maria ha collaborato negli anni con noti brand in giro per il mondo, ha vissuto a lungo a New York ma spesso tornava in Italia ed è proprio a Napoli, durante una passeggiata in uno dei mercatini della città, in un luogo magico ricco di emozioni che la designer tra tante pezzi vintage trovò una borsa degli anni Settanta, fu amore a prima vista e decise di riprodurla in chiave funzionale, donandole un manico geometrico di grande autorevolezza.

Serendipity tutto nasce grazie ad un manico, la forma di quel manico diventa una ossessione per la designer. In quel momento si accende una scintilla, la maniglia le ha comunicato una storia di equilibrio e perfezione mescolata a forza e determinazione: “C’era tutto, dovevo solo lasciare che la storia si svolgesse“. E dal quel manico che è nato tutto, anche la prima borsa āim Olivia, seguita dalla prima collezione.

Il manifesto del progetto prende forma, nasce āim handmade in Italy, brand di borse ben fatte e dall’immagine solida, pulita, con un’attitudine responsabile. Longevity, Uniqueness e Responsibility elementi unici che rappresentano la filosofia del brand: «Penso che la gente oggi abbia voglia di qualcosa che duri nel tempo, e qualcosa che dura deve necessariamente essere fatto con il cuore e con le mani. Sulla questione sostenibilità, sto cercando di fare del mio meglio, usando rimanenze e scarti di produzione, del mio fornitore e delle concerie. Non credo sarà mai necessario produrre niente di nuovo, anche dovessi crescere nei volumi farò piuttosto edizioni limitate, sono anche aperta all’utilizzo di nuovi materiali. Produco tutto a Napoli, dove da sempre cerco di portare lavoro per supportare l’artigianato locale». 

Ogni pezzo è unico, realizzato da artigiani esperti che lavorano in piccole aziende di pelletteria a conduzione familiare, utilizzando solo i materiali più pregiati che derivano dalla sovrapproduzione. Il concetto di riutilizzo e la riduzione degli scarti è entrato nel progetto quasi per caso. “La sostenibilità non era pianificata, proprio come la prima borsa, ma ancora una volta: è successo e basta“, dice la designer.  “Vogliamo vendere pezzi unici, sganciati dalla frenesia delle collezioni e che non abbiano un impatto sul nostro pianeta. Riutilizzo, riciclaggio e gestione della fine del ciclo di vita: la nostra responsabilità è parte integrante della nostra proposta progettuale iniziale. E lo sarà sempre“.

Sustainability and craftsmanship, āim handmade in Italy is an Italian bags brand created by designer Anna Maria Mongillo: bags and accessories designer, Anna Maria has collaborated over the years with well-known brands around the world, she has lived for a long time in New York but often returned in Italy and it is in Naples, during a walk in one of the city’s markets, in a magical place full of emotions that the designer among many vintage pieces found a bag from the seventies, it was love at first sight and decided to reproduce it in functional key, giving it a highly authoritative geometric handle.

Serendipity, everything is born thanks to a handle, the shape of that handle becomes an obsession for the designer. At that moment a spark lights up, the handle communicated a story of balance and perfection mixed with strength and determination: “There was everything, I just had to let the story unfold“. And from that handle that everything was born, even the first āim Olivia bag, followed by the first collection.

The manifesto of the project takes shape, āim handmade in Italy is born, a brand of well-made bags with a solid, clean image, with a responsible attitude. Longevity, Uniqueness and Responsibility are unique elements that represent the philosophy of the brand: «I think people today want something that lasts over time, and something that lasts must necessarily be done with the heart and with the hands. On the issue of sustainability, I am trying to do my best, using inventories and production waste, from my supplier and from the tanneries. I don’t think it will ever be necessary to produce anything new, even if I were to grow in volumes I will rather do limited editions, I am also open to the use of new materials. I produce everything in Naples, where I have always tried to bring work to support local crafts».

Each piece is unique, made by expert craftsmen who work in small family-run leather goods companies, using only the finest materials that result from overproduction. The concept of reuse and waste reduction entered the project almost by chance. “Sustainability was not planned, just like the first bag, but once again: it just happened,” says the designer. “We want to sell unique pieces, unhooked from the frenzy of collections and that do not have an impact on our planet. Reuse, recycling and end-of-life management: our responsibility is an integral part of our initial design proposal. And it always will be“.
